THE WATCHERS
Ann Hirsch’s multi-figure compositions, either contained
groups or sculptural installations, enable her to explore quasi-linguistic
gestural systems, cloning as it relates to individuation and consciousness,
the dichotomy of object versus constituent of an environment and bodies
as contained units which activate surrounding spaces. The Watchers is a
series of nine cloned variants which combine a gothic sensibility with
a contemporary format. The Watchers are in the guise of beings that appear
human but somehow miss the mark. These aggressively confrontational figures
perch above the viewer’s eye suggesting mammalian birds ready to pounce.
