New York poet and novelist of the vanguard Giannina Braschi is the
author of several books in Spanish and English, most notably the postmodern
poetry collection EMPIRE OF DREAMS (Yale University Press) and the bilingual
comic novel YO-YO BOING! (Latin American Literary Review Press). Originally
from Puerto Rico, Braschi studied in San Juan, Madrid, London, and Paris,
before obtaining a PhD in Hispanic Literatures from State University of
New York--Stony Brook. She has taught creative writing and Hispanic
Literatures at Rutgers, Queens College, John Jay College and Colgate University,
where she served as National Endowed Distinguished Chair and Writer in
Residence.
She has won grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts,
Ford Foundation, Danforth Scholarship, New York Foundation for the Arts,
El Diario La Prensa, Reed Foundation, and Instituto de Cultura Puertoriquena,
among others. She is an avid collector of contemporary painting and sculpture.
She has written critical studies on Cervantes, Becquer, Lorca, and Vallejo.
She is currently working on a collection of essays, tentatively entitled:
Hamlet and Segismundo, reflections of ground zero.
