Johann Hjalmarsson
Johann Hjalmarsson has written 18 books of poetry, publishing his first book of poems when he was seventeen years old. In 1961, Hjalmarsson moved to Spain to study romance languages at the University of Barcelona, and began translating French and Latin American surrealist poets into Icelandic. He returned to Iceland and began a career as an arts reviewer and travel writer for the newspaper, Morgunbla?i?. Johann continues to translate poetry into Icelandic. In 2004, his collected translations (over 500 pages in length) will be issued by JVP Press. He was presented with an Icelandic Parliament Award in 2003 in recognition for his outstanding contributions to Icelandic literature as a poet and translator.
