A native of Ohio, John Matthias has taught English for many years at
the University of Notre Dame. He has been Visiting Fellow in Poetry at
Clare Hall, Cambridge, and lived for much of the 1970s and early 1980s
in the East Anglian region of Britain.
He has published twenty books of poetry, translation, criticism and
scholarship. Matthias has been awarded numerous grants and prizes including
those from the Ingram Merrill Foundation, the Poetry Society of America,
the Columbia University Translation Center and the Swedish Institute. He
has been a Fulbright Scholar and Lilly Endowment fellow.
In recent years Matthias has published Pages: New Poems and Cuttings
and Working Progress, Working title. His poetry has been translated
into some ten languages. Matthias teaches modern literature and creative
writing at the University of Notre Dame.
