Meena Alexander was born in Allahabad, India and spent her childhood
in India and the Sudan. She was educated there and in England . Her writings
have been widely anthologized and translated. Her volumes of poetry include
Illiterate Heart winner of a 2002 PEN Open Book Award and Raw
Silk, 2004. Her memoir Fault Lines (Publishers Weekly Choice,
Best Books of 1993) was reissued in 2003 with a chapter `Lyric in a Time
of Violence’ on writing poetry in the aftermath of 9/11. Her work
includes two books of criticism, two novels and a volume of poems and essays
Shock of Arrival: Reflections on Postcolonial Experience (1997)
She is the editor of the anthology Indian Love Poems (Knopf/ Everyman's
Library, 2005). She is Distinguished Professor of English at the Graduate
Centre and Hunter College,City University of New York.
