Varlam Tikhonovich Shalamov (July 1, 1907–January 17, 1982) was a Russian
writer, journalist, poet, political prisoner and Gulag survivor. He wrote
the celebrated Kolyma Tales, a series of short stories based on his life
in the Gulag.
